Residency Program

The University of Florida Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine offers a residency program that provides instruction in all facets of anatomic and clinical pathology, with opportunities for research.

16 residency positions are funded by UF Health Shands Hospital and the Malcom Randall Veterans Affars Medical Center. The four years training program meets all requirements for anatomic pathology and clinical pathology (AP/CP) board certification. In anatomic and clinical pathology, diverse and interesting case material is received from Shands and the MRVAMC, where all medical specialties are represented. The majority of residents pursue training in both anatomic and clinical pathology, which permits them to take both the AP and CP certifying exams, administered by the American Board of Pathology.

As residents advance, they take more responsibility for clinical services. This is achieved by giving residents the opportunity to:

  • Review primary laboratory data and decisions on the workup of abnormal test results
  • Complete preliminary evaluations of frozen sections and surgical pathology specimens
  • Make on-call decisions regarding various aspects of pathology
  • Supervise junior residents
